AACPS “Interested in Law” Event: Inspiring the Next Generation of Lawyers

On April 2, 2025, Suzanne Burnett, Alicen Jobes and Matt Katz, along with fellow attorneys, judges, and members of the Anne Arundel County Bar Association (AABA), participated in the Legal Outreach event at Severn Run High School. The event gave students a firsthand look at careers in law, helping them understand what it takes to pursue a legal profession.

Learning from Legal Professionals

Students heard from practicing lawyers and judges who shared real-world experiences, the challenges of the profession, and the rewards of serving the community. This context helped students see beyond textbooks and understand the practical side of law.

Key Takeaways for Students

During the event, students were able to:

  • Explore real case examples and learn how lawyers approach problem-solving
  • Receive guidance on educational paths and skills needed for a career in law
  • Ask questions about mentorship, internships, and career opportunities
  • Connect with local professionals to build early networking relationships

Why Community Engagement Matters

Events like “Interested in Law” highlight the AABA & Burnett Injury Group’s commitment to education, mentorship, and community involvement. By connecting students with practicing legal professionals, the program:

  • Inspires curiosity and ambition in young people
  • Provides a pipeline for the next generation of lawyers
  • Strengthens connections between students and the local legal community

Programs like this ensure students gain a meaningful perspective on legal careers, while also reinforcing the importance of mentorship and guidance in professional growth.
